The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
GATE is considered one of the most prestigious competitive exams in India.
The primary purpose of the GATE exam is to evaluate the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science.
GATE scores are used for admissions to postgraduate programs (Master’s and Doctoral) in prestigious institutes across India, including IISc and IITs.
Additionally, GATE scores are also used by some public sector undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment purposes.
Answer: Every year, the GATE exam is conducted by one of the IITs. In 2025, IIT Roorkee is going to conduct the exam.
In 2021, IIT Bombay conducted the exam. In 2022, IIT Kharagpur conducted the GATE exam. In 2023, the GATE exam was conducted by IIT Kanpur. In 2024, IISc Bangalore conducted the exam.

Answer: BCA/BSc (three-year graduation degree program) students are not allowed for the GATE exam. Students are eligible after completing MCA.
Answer: You can apply for the GATE on the IISc Bangalore official website. The link is not active yet. You can expect the GATE notification to apply for GATE in September.
Answer: There has been no change in the syllabus and paper pattern from GATE 2019 so far. You can check the syllabus and paper pattern for Computer Science Engineering (CSE, CS, and IT).

Answer: Most of the PSU companies are offering jobs through the GATE. Based on your GATE rank you will get the call for a face-to-face interview.
If you are preparing for the GATE exam to get into a Government job, work hard to secure a good rank.
Some PSUs conduct their exam followed by the GATE exam. You have to apply it separately.
If you are from core branches like Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical, there will be so many PSUs and job opportunities in the government sector.
Answer: You will get college admission for a master’s based on your GATE score/rank. If you categorize the institutes and colleges, your preference for the colleges should be to IITs, NITs, IIITs/BITs, and then regional state-level colleges.
But this is not so straightforward. Some of the top NIT colleges are better than low-rank IITs.

Admission for NITs is centralized and they offer the colleges based on your rank. There will be no interviews.
To get into the IITs, you will get the call for further rounds based on your rank. Selected candidates have to go through rounds like online tests and face-to-face interviews.
